San Francisco 49er (w/a vengeance)

The cool mid day breeze from the bay, the radiant sun up above...and down below the 49ers lose again. But why is this new 49er fan so happy you ask?

For the first time in almost 10 years the 49ers found gold in dem darn hills! With a Division Championship and a dramatic win in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs, the niners were back this year. Yes, they may have technically lost in the Championship game in overtime, with a loss so heartbreaking, it was akin to a modern day teenage break up complete with facebook stalking and angry OMG texting, but in the end it was a great year nonetheless.

So we once had old timey 49er (black/white). With his sad demeanor, his pick-axe puncturing what is now left of his fandom and a look that would not inspire confidence in any potential stake buyer. Now, we have happy, go lucky, full of life, full of color, and full of hope for his gold diggin' prospects and for his good ol' back-to-mighty San Francisco 49ers!

Last year, I said "there's always next year" this year there was a next year...wait...what?

Sometimes, music inspires art and vice-versa. Here's SpongeBob Dancepants as he does The Reptile (Dubstep dance). A type of music made popular years ago in England and a dance recently made popular through the web. This felt just right for the sponge man, knowing his wicked style and uncanny coolness.

Enjoy, and if you get a chance give dubstep a try...sorta strange at first, but it's got it's good qualities, I mean I'm sure Bob digs it so how bad could it be?

Halloween Pumpkin

This year's Halloween pumpkin design did not come out as good as I would've hoped. I'd say it's more creepy, weird, hairy; in a weird, hairy, creepy sort of way. Lessons for next year: have backup carving tools in case they brake, a skull is a skull is a skull, and lastly, they can't all be hits...if they were, we'd never have top ten lists!

For this project, the client was very hands on. This meant lots of development to get his vision just right. Much of what's seen here was me trying to hit his exact vision, however I was able to throw in some of my trickerations in there for good measure (and yes trickerations is a real word).

He wanted to do something a little different for his company's website and online social network, something that was bit more lighthearted, but still drives the point home. In the end this was a really fun project for a cool client on the opposite coast.The King, if you will, of New York's Line-X!

High drama in The Deutschland! US Soccer, 1 year later does it again! This time the women's team delivers an unbelievable ending in a playoff game during the Women's World Cup.

After a game filled with refereeing sketchier than the contents of my sketchbook, being down a player for most of the game, and a very skilled Brazil team; Abby Wambach pulls through.

During the last minute of the last period of overtime, when all hope seemed lost, Ms. Wambach headed the ball in the like a head butting technician would, tying the game. The US would eventually win the game in Penalty Kicks putting a big bow on one of the most exiting games ever in US Soccer history! I laughed, I cried, I yelled, I was inspired to post this, all thanks to Abby and the US women.

And so...what is next for Ms. Wambach? President Wambach has a nice ring to it =) See ya in the 2012 Olympics and thanks for the good time Abby and Team USA.

Quickie X-Men 2 sequence study: Wolverine Whyllin' Out

X-Men 2 was a pretty good movie. Perhaps my favorite of the 3 x-men films. Thought I'd give my favorite sequence (with Wolverine) the old break down.

There was a lot of cuts that happen so fast, they are used to build the Wolvie 'losing it'(whyllin') moment. It was pretty mind blowing seeing the small but important choices that were made to make the sequence work. A cut here, a quick pan there, a slow to fast pan and everything in between is used in this very quick but very cool sequence.

Thanks again for the inspiration to Wolverine and his homies.

Fans of the niners no doubt cried, then laughed, and then cried some more. And so, this sketch was inspired by the sadness...ugh there's always next year blah blah blah.

After his World Cup Heroics that can and should be seen all over the internet, Mr. Donovan has earned his own post!

Landon Donovan single handedly kicked the USA to a victory and to a historic, and I mean HISTORY channel-historic victory. When all hope seemed lost and time was but a few minutes away from ending the hopes of all faithful USA supporters in the last game of the first round, after failed attempt after failed attempt, the Man. The now legend... Mr. Landon Donovan confidently kicked the ball in the goal and sparked a celebration that was felt all over the world!

And so...what is next for Mr. Donovan when he is done kicking ass in soccer? President Donovan?!?!?! hey he's got the credentials for sure =) See ya in 4 years and thanks for the goodtime Landon and team USA.

LOST - has Ended........?

Well a few weeks have passed, and LOST is over. Over and there is no coming back. The ending? It was indeed an ending that you would expect. Open and free-flowing like the L.A. Freeways. There were no questions left over and everything was wrapped up in a neat little package... Or was it? Yes it was... Orrrrrr was it?

After years of good quality entertainment, the finale wrapped up some loose ends, answering mostly new but some old questions as well. All characters learned something, and the audience was taught a lesson about appreciating life. So it was an ending? After being a little let down, I've come to realize that LOST was never intended to be found. Indeed the whole point of the show was in the on-the-nose title.

And so, to all who watched... the journey is over. To those who didn't, I'm a little jealous that they were not invested in the show like I was. But... there have been rumors of a spin-off which will take place in Los Angeles, CA. Rumors are that the show will follow the Oceanic 6 as they pursue careers in acting. The agony of being turned down and the glory of getting the part, will be chronicled in this emotional reality capturing program. Here's a piece inspired by the upcoming show:

What could possibly be so important as to interrupt my plethora of LOST posts? Why bring this scenic joyride to my final LOST post to a screeching halt? Is it something of note? of consequence? It is. It. Is. Time! For. The. WORLD. CUP.
After 4 years of waiting the sporting event to top all sporting event, the omnipotence and grace of International Soccer(aka Football) has arrived! As a tribute to a lifelong love, A WORLD CUP inspired post! While the usual countries always tend to make it far in this tournament of badasses, I faithfully/loyally hold hope for our US selection to have a strong showing at the cup and show the world how kick ass the USA can be!

Jin-Soo Kwon and Sun-Hwa Kwon also known as Jin and Sun. Although, the show has recently ended, (one more LOST post coming soon which will answer allllll questions left over by the finale) My favorite characters are the last 2 of the 6. Jin and Sun were always a bit mysterious, but not too much. A bit in love, but not that much. And a bit bland, but not really.
These two characters always seem to give clues without trying to. It was a very touching ending for them and one that will be remembered in TV for years to come. Gam sam nee-da Jin and Sun! (One post to end all LOST post coming soon)

Will Avatar hang with Oscars?

Soon we will know if Avatar will win the Best Picture Oscar. It is up against a 9 other worthy contenders. I've only seen about 3 or 4 of the nominated and minus one or two they would all be really good to win it. It would be really cool if Up or Avatar take it, one being an animated CG film and the other a good blockbuster type!
Since this year the Academy is nominating huge productions, I could think of only one guy is probably turning in his cape...I couldn't help but think how Mr. Dark Knight will probably not be watching the awards this week...Moment of silence for the awesome, oscar worthyness of The Dark Knight. The above is a sketch totally unrelated to that, but I'll post the color to it after the Oscars. Go animation related academy award nominated movies!

Wolverine and the Winter Olympics!

For my money, I'd have this guy light the Olympic torch, do a little alpine skiing, engage in some full contact speed skating, and wrap it all up with a firewood chopping contest! Thanks to the Olympics for all the cool sports and for this inspiration...eh?!

Faster than sound life drawing

Over the years I've developed certain ways of warming up for Life Drawing sessions. One of my favorites follows...1.)Buy a cup of coffee 2.)Chug said cup of coffee a few minutes prior to drawing and 3.) Using a sharpie/marker as quickly as possible sketch the model's pose/action. After several of these I am usually ready for the overall drawing session. Starting on a quick positive note cannot be over emphasized!

Here's a recent random page and as I loosen up after a couple pages the quickie drawing start to come much easier.

"Just for Men" and Santa?

Ever wondered who was most filled with joy when the Men's hair coloring product "Just for Men" was put on the market...That's right Jolly Ol' St. Nic! Over the years, our dear Santa Claus has stopped the practice of dying his beard/eyebrows due to the spike in size of the "haircare products" section of his budget. That and the constantly stained sleeves and hat made him realize that it is better to be old and jolly than old and creepy.
In conclusion, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all! All the best in 2010!

rchy. Is a great show! Since the second season just wrapped up, I thought I'd do a little tribute to the show. Here's the main character with one of the greatest names ever "Jax" in his typical cool guy pose. The Show is about a small town Motorcycle Club that tries to take over their comedic world through a series of hylarious, ill-advised plans and wraps up every episode with a goodtime, knee-slapping funny lesson about friends, family, and life... Not really. But it is a serious show with good writing and a plethora of interesting characters that react on themselves and their environment.

Second season was really good, if you're floating out there...jump on board and give it a shot for a couple of episodes! Sons of Anarchy will make you want to lease a Harley, get a tattoo, and grow an outlaw beard out... or at the very least watch another episode.

ANAHEIM ANGELS?

Over the past 6 years or so I've had the honor/opportunity to work on almost all of the Angels Major recognition awards. From players to coaches and sponsors, I've had some sort of creative input/work for almost all of them along with and thanks to a great friend who is the Angels point person when it comes to this stuff.

In this case I only worked on cleaning up these photographs for the purposes of engraving on high-end crystal pieces. They tend to look kind of funky, indeed even creepy but once they are through with the process...

They look like the following. Here they are, both presented on the field at the Big A! Being a pretty big Anaheim Angels fan (as I like to call them) I can't help but get giddy with butterflies in my stomach everytime I work on one of these...bordeline Fanboy even. Here Angels Slugger Vladimir Guerrero is recognized for reaching the 400 Home Runs mark! One of only six players in MLB History with at least 400 HR & .320+ average. And long time Yankee hitter, now Angel outfielder Bobby Abreu's #250 Home Run! One of only six players in MLB History with at least 250 HR, 2,000 Hits, 1,000 RBI, 1,000 BB, 300 SB. Yeah I guess I'm a fan...enjoy! Go ANGELS!

3 weeks ago I met up with an old college friend. His first words to me were "how did you know about Obama?". Nearly 4 years ago, in a caricature class at CSUF I decided to draw a "famous" person caricature of then Jr. Senator Barack Obama. Once in front of the class, the teacher mentioned he liked it, but didn't have any idea who this guy was. I then said that this man would be our president in 4 years, and it was received to a classroom of confused eyebrows.

And now 10 minutes after President Obama's projection to win the 2008 election, I felt it only proper to post that little drawing I did nearly 4 years ago:

Here's an oldie but a goodie of mine. He's "The Man" in more ways than one. If you work in an office setting you might run into this man from time to time.

Good Ol' Don

Don Lagerberg, one of the best skilled, down-to-earth teachers I've ever had, recently retired. I, along with all of the many alumni of his of at CSU Fullerton were given the chance to share some art inspired by him. Here's what I came up with:The piece was inspired by Don's almighty power of construction of the head! As important as the technical skills that he always taught, Don also emphasized a good positive attitude towards one's art and other artists'. Knowing he is retired, I feel really lucky to have had him as a teacher.

Well here's a quick post. Since I enjoy getting decked out for Halloween, I first wanted to be a Rooster Zombie, but I couldn't find the right gear. So regular Zombie it is!

Except I think I look like a sleazy-no good-used car sales man. In any case, equally scary!

Matt Groening is my Animation Hero?

A while back I sat eagerly watching one my favorite shows:

When it dawned on me that Matt Groening just might be a Hero to me, in Animation that is.

As Matt Groening and James L. Brooks sat with Chuck Rose and explained how the Simpsons movie came about, my expectations grew. I must admit, initially I was convinced the Simpsons movie would be a creative phone-in with little or no substance. However since watching Mr. Groening's The Simpsons movie, I have come to believe that he and Mr. Brooks did put their heart and soul into it. It was indeed a great movie, given where The Simpson's universe is currently residing.

And so, getting back to is Matt Groening my Animation-Hero? Although, his initial animations where not the greatest, his beginning character designs where not the greatest, he managed to create something many animators/show creators have attempted to, but have not fully accomplished.

He created a relatable world. A world that did not need gimmicks, and that the viewers all share something with. His world is perpetually evolving, letting his characters grow and expand without leaving the audience behind.
For all this I call Matt Groening my Animation Hero! Thanks for creating the Simpsons and giving me hours upon hours of high-quality Animated Entertainment!

A few weeks back, I saw this old clipped magazine article. It had an awesome drawing that looked kind of like this one. I did a quick sketch and never saw the article again.

Now I'm on a quest to find the article and the artist! Maybe I'm not up on my animation history, but if somebody out there has any idea who could've originally created this, please give me your thoughts.

Ever graduated from a University and had 2 other siblings graduate at the same exact time from the exact same School? I have! (brother not pictured)
That's right, that is Krusty the Klown! HEY HEY! A great inspiration for me going into Animation.

B.F.A. Ent. Art/ Animation, doesn't really matter when entering the industry, but it will be a nice fill in for the old wall.

A lesson in Color from a 6 year old?

What a better way to begin my blog than with a lesson I just received from my 6 year old niece.

I asked my niece to color these two characters I created. Their final design is not complete, but she wanted to color, so I gave her these.

She picked some interesting colors that left me thinking...

Always interesting to get the demo's take on art.

Any critque is welcomed! But please be nice about my niece's coloring.
